How investing in bonds works

  • Investors usually buy bonds with the understanding that they will regularly receive yield, being an amount for providing the money and deferring its consumption.
  • Unlike with shares, the investor does not acquire an ownership interest in the issuer, i.e. the entity that issued the bond.
  • In an initial offering of a bond, the minimum investment amount is based on the specified price for one piece of the bond.
  • Remember that investing involves risk. The risks can be partially reduced by buying multiple different investments that are not interconnected.

TIP: Are bonds an interesting investment?

Bonds have certain advantages and disadvantages, just like any other investment instrument. Bonds with a high rating are among the more conservative investment products, but even those are not without risk. Such bonds can help create certain balance within an investment portfolio. If you invest most of your money in higher-risk investment instruments, adding higher-rated bonds can diversify your portfolio and reduce some of the risk you take.
